Criminal Sentence 454: A Country in the Garden

A laughable sentence from a book I'm reading (about the Tower of London):

"Raleigh was even allowed to grow the exotic plants he brought back from the countries he discovered in the Tower garden."

He discovered countries in the garden?

"Raleigh was even allowed to grow in the Tower garden the exotic plants he brought back from the countries he discovered."
