Criminal Sentence 451: Grammar in the Sky

From something I read online:

"The skies the limit."

Hmm. This is not meant to be a pattern: "the" and a noun; "the" and a noun. This is supposed to be a cliche: "The sky's the limit."

Use neither, please!

I didn't see it as a pattern. I see them typing the contracted "sky is" (without the apostrophe) and the spell checker 'correcting' the plural ("skys") to "skies". I'd call it a spelling error.
