"Less" goes with uncountable items such as "sugar" and "flour." You'd have to use "fewer" with countable items like "complaints" and "compliments."The Sentence Sleuthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09253486236870691918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5957711516423189280.post-24033640569459836472010-03-29T00:31:31.260-07:002010-03-29T00:31:31.260-07:00How about using "less" instead of "...How about using "less" instead of "few"

Thankskrishnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02770404018020597189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5957711516423189280.post-7269682313536829142010-02-18T08:14:29.837-08:002010-02-18T08:14:29.837-08:00Even the final recasting sounds wrong to me. "...Even the final recasting sounds wrong to me. "Amount" and "number" seem to be misused frequently in recent years. One can have an amount of cash (money), an amount of liquid (as in a recipe), and some amount of courage. Then one may also have a number of friends, any number of pets, and a number of vehicles (cars). To hear or read about an "amount of vehicles" does not add up in my mind.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
